At first, my refrigerator was getting warm and then cold, then warm again. I replaced the thermostat with part number AP3882436. Now the freezer is turned to it's warmest setting and it is cooling well below 0 degrees F. The fridge is almost at it's warmest setting and cools to 30 degrees. Is the thermostat defective?

Are you sure that you got the end of the thermostat's sensing capillary to the same position as the old one?

the temperature at the freezer outlet vent is -20 with the freezer set at its warmest setting. The temperature is stabilized. The new thermostat was put back in its original location.

Drop the control panel and check the operation of the slide control that controls air flow through the vent from the freezer.
