My amana washer of 5 years and 1 month makes a loud noise, almost like an airplane taking off during the spin cycle, and the spin seems to be faster than normal. I called the place were we bought it, and they diagnosed the problem over the phone. Never looked at it just said there was a known problem and not to repair it, just by a new one. Any advise?

Well, as much as I hate to agree with someone who gives a cursory diagnosis over the phone without examing the machine, I am afraid they are correct. It could be a transmission issue, but more like a bearing failure, and this is probably the well known problem they were referring to as Maytag has redesigned the part. If they sold a lot of these machines they are probably not very happy. See this tech bulletin. http://www.servicematters.com/m...rary/docs/TDL-0060-B.pdfThe repair is expensive, time consuming and requires special tools, so again I think there advice was probably correct and a new machine is in your future. Sorry not to have better news.

Sure, run it until it fails. If it gets too loud just shut the door or turn up the TV. Nothing to lose.
With respect to a replacement I would purchase a no-frills, basic top loader. I am partial to the direct drive machines Whirlpool/Kenmore but a GE or Frigidaire will also do a good job for you. They last a long time, they are easy and inexpensive to fix and the higher priced machines are just a bunch of marketing bells and whistles.
You do not need a front loader, and at all costs avoid any machine with a microprocessor in the controls.
Good luck, hope your old machine just goes on forever.
