Hi all I got my GE refrigerator working now my Kenmore went bad.
The coils in the freezer are frosted up and not very cold the frig is also warm.
Took the panel off the top freezer box and there is black sot on the walls. I think the defroster burned up how does on check this out? Kenmore model 106.7677120

Question after removing the old heater coil and checking the bi-metal switch and the defrost timer (both checked good) does electric always flow thru the defrost coil. I have 117 votes flowing only when the box is cold with the compress running or not running. The only time electric is not flowing is when the box is warm. Is this normal?

When the freezer is cold, turn the defrost timer till it clicks, then check the heater, it should get cherry red. If so, you probably have a bad defrost timer. Get the part # from it and order it here at this parts site.

The heater brunt in two and I have removed it. Tiring to find out what went wrong.
Should the heater wires always have electric running thru them? Even with the compressor running?
