Washer has been doing the jet engine sound for a few months, so I now realize it needs a new bearing. In addition, it has now stopped working altogether. When starting a cycle, Door Locked light goes on but tub never moves, then machine shuts off. When problem first showed up machine stopped just before spin cycle, but now it never gets started. This is a series 16 front loader. Before I start ordering parts and taking the thing apart I would like to know the answers to these questions:

1) In addition to bearing, I understand I should replace three wax motors (for door and for bleach/softener dispensers). Is that correct?
2) From what I have read here and elsewhere neither of these two common problems explain my symptoms. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what is actually wrong and/or how to diagnose it?

Thanks

After thinking for a few minutes I realized I was being an idiot for not recognizing the whirring sounds. The problem, of course, was that the belt had fallen off. Upon replacing this the thing is working. Running now to see if belt will fall right back off as soon as it tries to spin under load. Assuming it does not, the question is now which repairs are worth doing on a 15-year-old machine:
1) Wax motor replacement? Despite all warnings, the thing has gone 15 years without burning out the R11 resistor or anything else. Replace or gamble?
2) Bearing? Seems likely to me that damaged bearing was reason for the belt falling off. But replacing bearing is nontrivial parts & time. If I do replace it how long can I hope to keep this machine working?

Thanks!

Hi Ronen,

1) The only wax motor in the door lock can cause a damage to the control board. This part is inexpensive and it would not hurt to replace it just to prevent possible damage.

2) That's absolutely right. Replacing the bearing is not an easy job, but it can save you money on buying a new washer. Your washer probably will last a few more years after such repair. Besides a new bearing, which you can get from a bearing store, you have to order the new seal kit. You can find more useful information in one of our previous threads: http://forum.appliancepartspros...repair-pic-tutorial.html or here.
