Good for you. Yes, with the capacitor disconnected, the motor will not start, it will draw excessive current which can damage the windings. Thanks for reporting your repair job.

Hi!
I have done all of the things discussed in this thread: opened the machine and replaced the broken coupler. Turned it back on and smelled a burning smell. Taken it apart again and re-fitted the new coupler.
Now the machine has a new trick- it is getting several seconds into the spin cycle and tripping the breaker!
All of the wires seem to be connected completely, I can't see anything that looks like a hot wire touching the case, at least not around the motor where I was working. The motor and the transmission turned freely at the coupler, both directions.
What could the issue be? Motor? Capacitor? Definitely something with the wiring? I'm stumped.

I had the burning smell myself after replacing the coupler, found this board via Google, set the coupler fittings flush and no more smell. Just wanted to thank sidfink43, your fix worked and it is much appreciated.

Wow, this is a 9 year old post and it keeps on giving. Thank you Sidfink43. I had the same exact problem with my motor coupler on my almost 20 year old Whirlpool washer and I really thought that I fried the motor and transmission, but after my friend finding this post, we got my washer working again. Thank you so very much. Your solution also helped me from Covid-19 because I don't have to go out and shop for a new washer. Thank you.

will try the things posted
my mind told me to take off coupler and pound it further onto shaft
on covid lockdown for 2 weeks from today feb 3 for 2 weeks
so have time

So I'm going through this right now....if the coupler isn't installed properly the motor with him and smell like burning?
