loud grinding noise during spin cycle, basket very slow to spin up, no smell...just nasty grind

I would pull off the front panel and look for water leaking above the tranny.
If so, you have bad spin bearing and seal, not an easy job. You can go to web site www.applianceaid.com for info on this, or post it as a bearing problem and get better advice.
