Washer started making a noise that was rare and I went in and smelled smoke, so I unpluged it but there was no fire, but smoke was in the room. It did this with all the water in it, I had to take the clothes out and dip it out. I was afraid to plug it back in and spin the water out or see if it would. Is it a lost cause and ready for the grave yard?

You will need to drain the washer by laying the drain hose down. Then tip it over on it's face, remove the back panel and check for either a loose belt, or a bad/jammed pump 358036 ,hopefully, you can clean the pump out, a lot of these old pumps where easy to take apart.
