Dryer overheats and shuts off. The vent is clear. Where should I look first?

Check for an abundance of lint in the bottom of the dryer cabinet and accumulated lint in or on the motor. The most likely situation is, the heat overload on the motor is opening and the motor stops. You're probably going to need a new motor, That would be the first place to look.
