the washing machine starts and starts the cycle, but we have to manually advance the timer to finish the wash. I have replaced both the timer and speed control switch and the problem is still there. Did I get a defective part or is there something else that I am overlooking?

Boy, it sure sounds like you got a defective part, as those two parts are the ones that most likely would cause your problem.

Do you have this problem in all cycles? And is the stopping point consistent with wash to wash and with cycle to cycle?

The most likely culprit is the speed control board, but I am afraid you will have to try both to find out for certain.

Good luck, let us what you find out.
