It might be the tub has broken loose from the mounting hub assembly. That would cause the top of the tub to rub against the top plastic rim causing those plastic shavings as well as the banging noise.

I removed the agitator and found that the tub had broken off from the part that makes it spin The T nut will not come off since the part below the nut spins (tub broken off from the part that makes the tub spin). I found the plastic is coming off from the plastic ring under the tub. This is happening since the tub was hanging off it dug into the plastic a little bit. Is it worth it to repair the washer or buy a new washer? The current machine is around 6 years old.

GE WH45X10060 Basket & Hub Asm - AppliancePartsPros.com take a look at the price....
