I have an aging, yet reasonably well serviced and functional 22 year old rooftop package heat-pump unit which has served me well all its years. It is very difficult, and expensive, to crane a new unit onto our roof. Am thinking about having the compressor and fan motor replaced before it quits, one of these hot days. Can I upgrade to a 2 or 2 1/2 T compressor while at it? I looked up the part and it looks to have the same mounting base. I am not too worried about a Seer rating, as I want to stick with the old style refrigerant.

We live in a warm area of Los Angeles, in a 1,300 sq/ft condo, built in 1992, and I have replaced the windows with double-pane insulated type. Most of our challenge is cooling for 5 months of the year. We did not even run the heat all last winter.

Thoughts on modernizing, uprating or replacing the compressor?

Thanks much.
