HI I have a kenmore gas dryer that does not work anymore. During sandy I got an electric surge into my house and now my dryer does not work. When i open the door the light inside the dryer turns on but nothing on the front panel works at all. What does it sound like it might be?

Do any of the LED's on the control panel turn on? If not check all the wire connections and check for supply voltage at the control board. If the indicator lights do turn on check the door switch with an ohmmeter for continuity when the switch is pressed in.

Yes none of the led come on. Am I wrong to assume there is power to the machine due to the fact the light bulb inside turns on when I open the door?

Well, there's power to parts of the machine, so you need to figure out where you're losing it. Let's take the door switch for instance. There's three wires on the door switch. One wire is COMMON and is on the common terminal on the switch. The wire for the light is on the terminal marked NC or Normally Closed. That means power for the light can go from the COM to to the NC and the light is on. The wire for the start switch is on the terminal marked NO or Normally Open so power can't go to the start switch with the door open. Now we close the door. The part of the switch that was closed for the light, is now open, no light. and the part of the switch that was open, is now closed, power to start switch. Just because part of the switch is good (LIGHT) doesn't automatically mean the other part of the switch (START) is also good. Now do you get it?
