Have a side by side that cools fine for the first couple of hours then the breaker trips. I am thinking the defroster is coming on and staying on. Not sure where it is located. would like a second opinion on best way to troubleshoot.

A model number may help others help you.

To confirm or eliminate the defrost heater, disconnect it. tape up the connection to the heater so that it cannot short to anything and give it a try.

Most heaters are basically just a length of resistance wire so it cannot short internally.
Check that it is not shorting to the frame.
Check that the wires feeding it are not shorting to each other.

I doubt it is a defrost problem as usually a unit only goes through defrost every 8 hours or so.

Also is it blowing the breaker in the house electrical panel or is it tripping a GFI?

If it is an in receptacle GFI I would try it on another outlet.
This GFI type does go fairly often.

If OK
Next would be to open up the back of the freezer and check that all connections cannot provide a connection to the frame. By this I mean that there is moisture/ice that could provide a current path. Dry them off and check them. Do this with the unit unplugged.

This problem can be very difficult to fix as finding the current leakage can be near to impossible.

After the freezer is checked nest would be the compressor start device.
