Kenmore 700 Electric dryer (model # 110.69722800): timer apparently does not count down. The dryer continues to run, and heat, until you manually turn the timer knob to the 'OFF' position. Have yet to try the automatic drying cycle since this problem surfaced. Is there any chance that I won't have to replace the timer?

UPDATE: The problem also exists in the automatic drying cycles. This leads me to believe there may be a switch or sensor problem. But I'm stil concerned that the timer knob doesn't rotate throught the timed cycles.

When this timer motor goes bad the timer will not advance in any cycle. If the timer advances in the time dry cycle but not in the automatic cycle then there is another problem (sensor, switch, etc) but because it will not advance in any cycle it is a bad timer. The timer motor is inside the timer and cannot be serviced, the timer needs to be replaced.

My Sears Kenmore timer went bad also. At 2 am I awoke to the sound of the dryer still running. It was so hot in the laundry room and the clothes felt scorched!!!!! Thank Goodness I woke up !!!

It is the Kenmore 700 electric dryer 100.69722800 and was purchased just before christmas last year. (Not even 14 months in use)

The timer knob does not advance in the sensor mode or timed dry cycle...so from your previous post, I believe it is the timer.

The part is about 70.00 from a local part dealer who told me that the warehouse has 6 currently in stock because they are a hot item....meaning that there is a good demand for this particular timer.

I called One Source (Sears Help line) to talk to someone about the one year warranty just expiring and was told basically ....tough beans....but... they would send a repairman for 129 who would do a diagnostic of the dryer, order the part, and then after payment for the part....then there would be NO charge to come back and put it in. Isn't that big of them???

So for 200.00 plus tax....almost 1/2 the cost of the dryer, I could have my one year old Kenmore dryer fixed.

Never again!!!

PS...I also asked if they had a recall on the dryer timer as I have found multiple accounts on the web for timer failure.....Nope....No recall.....I think they should learn a lesson from Toyota!!!

Companies should stand behind their products better and take responsibility.

Brian,

I can appreciate your attempt to help me....but being the daughter of a tool shop owner in Northwestern Pennsylvania, I am quite mechanical and determined to take matters into my own hands.

We ordered the part for 69.95 from a local parts dealer and replaced it ourselves the following day. I would have had a bill for over $200 and had to wait another week if we followed the plan from One Source. (Sears customer service)

Bottom line....It is fixed...problem solved with no help from Sears.

I am thankful that I awoke that night....to find the dryer still running at 2am. When we opened the bottom compartment (a clip fell down and needed to be retrieved) I found that the light layer of lint on the heat exchanger was brown singed. With the timer broken...it would have run until Bora Bora froze over........or the house burned down!!

The shame of this story is that I was so hopeful when purchasing my Sears washer and dryer....I read reviews and made an attempt at getting a good quality item for a good value.....

I could be a very strong advocate for your products.... or as it turned out, I am someone who is very verbal about poor performance.....but sorry to say...I have a bad taste in my mouth about Kenmore at this point.

I wish you could internally address the issue with the dryer timers. Others post similar problems with relatively new Sears dryers, and I have a hard time believing that Sears isn't aware of this. They should have a system in place to handle problems that trigger frequently.

It isn't an issue about what the consumer is doing wrong, it's a product failure....

Best regards,
Ava Barba

PS...Did I mention Toyota????

Miss Barba,

I am glad that the issue has been resolved. I am still concerned about the situation you encountered and we’d still like to talk with you. One of the many things my team does is filter any feedback to the sources in question for coaching and improvement opportunities. We certainly do not accept mediocrity as a standard and would really like your input so that we can improve our practices and policies. If you would allow my team a few brief moments to talk with you we would greatly appreciate it. We would also still like to talk about the cost involved with purchasing your part and help in some way.
Please send us an email with a contact phone number to searscares@searshc.com so we can reach out to you at your convenience. We do still want the opportunity to make this right for you.

Ok...

Sears has an escalation area that handles angry customers....

So after contacting Brian and Robert at this number, they diffused my feelings that I had toward Sears. They gave us a Sears M/C gift card which covered my cost of the timer part and an additional 1 yr warranty on the dryer.

I think that this was a very fair and acceptable way to handle the situation.

I would like to say thank-you to them.

If you are still interested in help with diagnosis and/or repair, post the complete model number of the dryer and description on the problem. We'll do our best.

Gene.
