I have a Whirlpool washer that is iritating me. It won't spin any more. It was gradually losing it's spin, and we had to do small loads in order to get it to spin. But now it has stopped completely. Interestingly it does drain and does agitate. Any help?

It sounds to me like the clutch is worn out. Its located on top of the gearcase and looks kind of like a little silver brake drum. Its part no. 285785. It costs around $40 and takes around an hour to change out.

To get complete info on this direct drive washer, go to my sticky above "replacing direct drive washer brake shoes", you will need to purchase a spanner wrench to fix this if your brake shoes are bad.

With your information, you have given me the impression that you most likely have a brake / clutch assembly problem.

It could take either one or both of these parts to restore the spin performance of your machine.

Part number: AP3094539
Part number: AP3094539

Part number: AP3094537
Part number: AP3094537

With that in mind, you may want to have a service technician do the diagnosis and repair for you.

It could get involved, and is not something a basic "do it yourselfer" may want to get involved in.

Joe, I have to disagree. This forum is about giving advice and info for all who respond, even if they have no mechanical/electrical experience. They can develope skills with the help of this forum. To tell a person they should call someone else may be an insult to the person, and is contrary to the "American" way. We are a can do country and should not give up in dispair.
If we continue to give this negative advice, this fine parts site will loose parts sales.
Only exceptions would be repairs requiring a liscence and ones that require exceptional skills and experience.

Based on the wide variety of responses you've all helped me to realize that I should probably not try to do this myself and should get a repair man...thus saving me time, money, and frustration in the long run.

Thank you for your response. That is your realization that lacking certain skills, you opt to take this route. For others, with more knowledge and experience, would resent being told they where incapable of doing this job.
