The normal cycle on the washer will go about half way through the cycle and stop. There is some humming, but other than that nothing.
The first several times this happened we were able to advance the timer a bit and the cycle would finsih. this has since stopped working.
The Permanent Press cycle works just fine.
Also over the last 5 years thew washer has overflowed a dozen times. I dont know if this is realted or not.
thanks in advance for the help.

Since your machine works in one cycle, you do not have a mechanical problem. I suggest replacing the timer.
With respect to you overflowing problem, start by cleaning out the clear tube that goes from the tub to the water level pressure switch.

I would remove the clear plastic hose from the water level switch and blow in it to clear it out, then force vinegar down the tube with a turkey baster. This will dissolve detergent residue
