Today the agitator began to clunk, jerk and momentarily stop when most of the water is gone from the tube near the end of the spin cycle. If the agitator is held from spinning, the clunking stops, but as soon as the agitator is relased and begins to spin it clunks, jerks and momentarily stops again. Is this a serious repair problem, I can fix it myself or is it time to replace the machine. It has washed many a load of laundry.

Probably you are having a transmission failure in progress. It is a moderately expensive repair and one you can do without special tools (just takes time and patience) but given the age of your machine and the cost of a new transmission I would opt for a replcement machine.

Good luck.
