The lid switch is a safety device. It would not let the washer to spin and /or drain with open lid.

what about the timer, does the lid need to be shut to drain the water or just to spin

washer wont advance past wash cycle. timer does not advance. motor does not run. if i manually advance timer, nothing happens.
