Since you did not post a model number I am assuming this is a basic direct drive Whirlpool washer.

The permanent fix is to replace the switch. Your's is probably partially broken so it take pressure more than your lid tab will do to close it.

It is an inexpensive part, available on this site and at any appliance repair store.

This site will show you how to open the machine to get to it. It is in the cabinet.

We are having problems with the spin cycle on our washer. After doing some research it seemed it was most likely the lid switch. If we press down on the switch with a pen, then the washer runs all the way through. How can we fix this permanently?
