Guys this may help you. On each side of my trash compactor there are treaded rods which are turned by gears and a chain on the very bottom of the unit. If you're hitting a point in the path where unit gets stuck, it sounds like the plastic part which attaches to the gear is stripped or is slipping due to chain stretching over time. See this video. Hope it helps.

Hello Rick - I have the same problem with a 30 yr old Broan Compactor. Did you ever figure out the problem? Directional switches for my machine are all out of production and unavailable, but a new motor with a centrifugal switch is available for ~$300. Any words of wisdom? Thanks. RZ

During down stroke a loud bang then motor continued to run but would not return until I turned motor off and back on again. Will not return automatically after down stroke. Removed cardboard side pieces so could see what happens during down stroke, Everything appears normal until it gets to end of down stroke, then screws continue turning but no return until after turing compactor off and back on again.
Compactor is at least 20 years old. Would rather repair that replace.

thanks for reading.................
