Okay, lets try this.

If you slowly close the door, do you hear the switch click at any time?

A switch like that can change where it activates as the lever is depressed. its broken or damaged internally. So closing the door doesn't activate it, but pushing it a little farther does. You probably need a new switch.

We didn't replace it because we can start the dryer by engaging the switch manually (holding it in with a finger and it clicks normally)and pushing start with the door open. Once we close the door it won't start.

I have a Kenmore dryer that will not start. The control panel is working and when the door is open I can hold the door switch in and touch start which will start the dryer. However, when the door is closed it will not start. I replaced the door latch and door strike hoping that would help but it did not. Any suggestions?
