Thank you. I figured turning the thermostats to off would turn everything off except for the lights. I guess not.

Its called a mullion heater. It heats the area between the door seals to help prevent condensation and possible mold growth. A lot of the time there is a switch on the control panel that is labeled "prevents exterior moisture." That's what it controls.

The unit has been turned off for 4 days due to an unreliable evaporator fan, but it is plugged in. The front of the center post between the refrigerator and the freezer has maintained itself at 95°F with a room temperature of 70°F or less.
