If it's possible I'd test it first, while iced up so thermostat is closed. If there's a plug for the defrost element and thermostat at the evaporator a quick test for continuity (or resistance) through it would be all you need. If it is hard wired (and it probably is) you should be able to test up at control. There's a wiring diagram in the parts list here. If you don't have a multimeter to help diagnose, the thermostat is a good guess. It's cheaper than the board at least. That calrod style element is unlikely to fail.
