I have the same problem with my GE compactor. I took the entire outer casing off, and found the spinning screws are not engaged with the compactor unit. you need a PhD to get into those parts, so its done. I will never purchase another GE appliance. Even their repair guys are useless.

I think you should contact with GE appliance repair company or you should replace rather than repair..

When I press the pedal, the motor sounds like it is working but it never compacts and pedal doesn't go down so motor just continues. We've had several other issues with this item and all of our GE profile appliances. They are all about 2 yrs old and I wish I could throw all of them away. 😡
