Yes it sounds like a bad thermostat so I would start with it.
Odds are good it will solve your problem.

My Whirlpool ref/fre will stop running and melts down but the inside lights word. The compressor will not run. This has happened about 3 times. After moving the thermostat back and forth and it will start back up when it wants to. I have a new one on the way and this one is running great now. I may plan on putting this one in the garage if there is a chance of getting it to where is trust worthy. Any suggestiong!!!!!:eek:
