I have never done it but I would say that taking it apart would be easier.

Do a test run with the old element just to see how it goes.
Take a look at the sevice manual in my earlier post, Page 3-32

Is it easier to separate the tube to replace the heater wire ?:confused:

Does not really matter other than you cannot fix the element and must either replace the complete heater or just the element/wire.

I'm sorry....I gave you a poor description.:o A section of the coiled heating element broke off, and was laying on the inside of the metal tube.:(

Yes I would say so.

What's next ?
See if there is an obvious reason why it is touching the case re: an insulator has come loose etc. or has it just stretched and sagged over time.
If nothing is obvious then I would replace the heater see below.
Note if you feel able to do it you can also buy just the heating wire and re-string it see below. Doing this will save you about $55.00

I just checked the heater and found a section of the coiled heating element laying on the bottom of the metal tube that contains the heating coil.:eek: What's next ? Is it just a bad heater ? :confused: Thanks !!:)
