Simon,
Thanks a bunch for your help. I ordered the timer and replaced in 10 mins. Your diagnosis was correct - it was a bad timer. The dryer is back to normal.
Out of curiosity, I opened up the dead timer. Boy, it is full of copper reeds - age old mechanical stuff  . No wonder they fail. I was thinking these timers would be electronic.

When I set the timer to any mode (regular, permanent press), the dryer makes small clicking sounds but when I push the "Start" button the dryer does not run at all. When I move the timer dial to the "finish guard" cycle, the motor and the drum run fine - most likely this cycle doesn't need any heat. The door switch is fine.
Could this be a timer switch issue or the thermal fuse issue? Appreciate any pointers.
