Could it be the fan motor that is making the noise?
I doubt it motor will scrape or squeal but not click.

I do not think you have any choice but to open it up and find out what is causing the clicking. If related to a fan it will be a rapid clicking. Could be something simple.

As letsride said is the compressor working/cooling.
It could be the compressor trying to start but cannot for some reason. Then it overheats trips the thermal protect and tries again when it cools down. This will be a slow clicking.

When we turn the unit on, it makes a clicking noise. The repair person (without taking the unit apart) guessed that the propeller needs to be replaced. Could it be the fan motor that is making the noise? And is it possible to tell the difference between a cracked propeller and a bad fan more -- without taking the unit apart? Thanks for answering ASAP. The summer is here and it's already 90 degrees.
