The oven will work without the gasket as it's there to protect the turntable motor from spill overs while cooking. Manufacturers usually don't make a point of putting things in their products that don't serve a purpose so it's up to you whether you put it in or not.

Is the gasket really necessary? What is it's purpose? If I can't locate it for sale, will the oven and carasoul work without it? Or is this piece very important. Thanks.

You just need the gasket and the support. The image in the parts breakdown looks like it's open in the middle, but it actually has a shaft that will go through the hole in the bottom of the cavity and connects to the motor shaft.

I just moved into my home and some parts are missing from my microwave carasoul. I have the circular glass tray but no support and nothing to connect to the motor shaft beneath the surface of the oven floor. I confirmaed the motor shaft is rotating and the oven heats but I need to replace the carasoul parts. Whirlpool has discontinued a lot of these and I cant locate a repar company to work on it as the parts are unavailable. I checked the on-line schematic diagrams and confirmed I am missing the "support" for the carasoul and a "gasket" for the support. It does not appear any other parts are needed, HOWEVER, I do not see a part which connects to the motor shaft beneath the surface. I still need a shaft extension of some sort to attach to the motor shaft, and extend it through the oven floor hole, into the carasoul support, to rotate the glass tray. I do not see any such item on the schematic. Is it part of the "gasket" or does it come included in the "support" part? I need to know before I invest in items to fix this and still end up missing a crucial item to make it function. Both the gasket and support are still available at various on-line warehouses. But what else, if anything, am I missing? Thank you.
