I had same problem. thought it was timer. saw another post with same prob. he ran cycle with no clothes, just water and it would spin in cycle that would not spin with clothes in. I did same experiment and had the same outcome; it went through the full cycle without clothes in Regular. So it was not the timer at all. Check the clutch slipping, lid switch or water level switch. I am a weekend pro.

Most likely the problem is a bad timer. - The part number for the timer is AP3099903 Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool washer Model LA8580XWW2Gene.

Problem with FINAL spin cycle,,,,, it works on one of the settings,(heavy duty) but will not do final spin on 2 of the other settings. Do I need to replace the timer, or something else?
