hoping someone can answer a few questions.

My 6 year old Frigidaire front loader started making some serious noise during the spin cycle. I took a look at it, and the only thing I really notice is that the shaft is free to move about a 1/2 inch or so front to back.

Does anyone know if this is normal or could be the cause of all the noise when it is spinning? Nothing else seems wrong and unless I tear it completely down I wont know the condition of the spider. I am thinking that the spider is OK as when I hold the drive pulley I can't find any play in the basket, making me think the spider is not broken like I have read in other posts. It drains ok, spins ok, just a serious loud noise.

Anyone have any advice on this? I have to mount the dryer on top of the washer as it all sits in limited space, so buying a new washer would mean buying a new dryer most likely too.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Well, we usually have good news, but in your situation it is probably the rear bearing going and the failure of the spider, or soon to be failure of the spider. The rear bearing is not a replaceable item, you have to buy the entire rear half of the tub.

These problems have plagued these models. The only good news is that you should be able to replace the washer without replacing the dryer.

You might as well take off the dryer and pull the washer apart, since you will have to remove the dryer if you replace the washer.

Good luck, hope it turns out differently then what we think it is.
