Washer Repair

My washer will fill with water, but then nothing, no noise, nothing. If I turn the dial to spin, it will then spin the water out. But in the wash cycle it will not agitate. I don't even know where to start. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

Does it really spin the water out, or does the drain pump just pump the water out with no spin?

My washer fills with water, but then nothing. I don't hear the motor even trying to do anything. However, if I turn it to spin, the motor comes on and spins the water out. Please, any help?
