I have a Kenmore 80 series Model # 110.23832100 washing machine. The problem is that it will not spin after the washing agitation, rinse agitation and spin cycles. It sound like it is starting these modes and the water will drain out but it will not spin. To correct it all I have to do is lift the lid and close it and then it will spin. I have put a pen in the switch to watch the cycles and when it is suppose to spin and doesn't all I have to do is remove the pen and put it back in the lid switch and it will spin it. I was told that maybe it was the clutch so I replaced that and it did not cure the problem.

Your problem is likely in the timer. The timer must pause the machine to cause the transmission to shift from neutral drain to spin. When you open the top you manually create this pause.

Change out the timer and you should be all set.

when I watch and listen to the machine it is making a long pause before it goes into when it should spin it. Thats why I,m thinking it's not the timer. The timers are a little expensive so I really need to know if that's the problem. Any other suggestions or am I just gonna have to bite the bullet and buy a new timer?

We cannot diagnose any problem with complete certainty on a Forum like this because we are not there to see the machine in operation. We can only tell you what is most likely the problem.

If the machine continues to operate the pump and will not go into spin unless you manually stop it by pushing in the timer or lifting the top so that the lid switch stops the machine, it is highly likely the timer is the problem. As I indicated, the timer must pause the machine to cause the transmission to shift from neutral to spin.

I'm having the same symptoms as the previous post. Do you know if the timer fixed the problem? How much is a new timer?

Symptoms are if you lift the lid and defeat the lid switch you can get the agitator spinning by hand and it will spin out the remaining water. I didn't play around with the sequence of operation to see if it was a timing issue.

Please start a new thread and put in your model number and a detailed description of your problem. I don't understand exactly what you are saying, for example, will it spin with the lid open, will it spin without help or do you start it spinning by hand, then lower the lid to keep it going.

I bought a timer and put it in and it did not solve the problem. Seemed like it was going to cost me more than the machine was worth so I went and bought a new one. Sorry I couldn't help.

Most Whirlpool/Kenmore direct-drive models feature a "neutral-drain" cycle. After the agitate cycle, it pauses a few seconds, and then goes into a "neutral drain" for two minutes or so. Then it will pause the motor a few seconds and restart, causing it to spin. This prevents it from spinning until it's empty.

Opening the lid during the "neutral drain" cycle and closing it again will cause it to "kick" into spin.

The "neutral-drain" state will "reset" during the agitate cycle, so that it can drain out again afterwards.

The behavior you describe is normal. However, if it doesn't pause once after two minutes of draining, then I'd worry (timer). Also, if it "kicks" into spin WHILE it is still draining (before the pause), I'd also worry (transmission).

Most other brands will normally spin while draining. Maytag calls this the "Swirl-Away" feature.
