Model Number: ALW880QAW Brand: Amana Age: 5 - 10 years
I have an Amana Washer, Model ALW880QAW. When it goes into Spin Cycle, there is excessive wobble and vibration in the entire tub assembly. Opening the top lid slightly, I can see the agitator wobbling over an inch, side to side, and front to back. The tub balance ring seems to be ok, and has liquid in it. The big balancer towards the back seems secure. On a hunch, I ordered the 6 Tall Tub Springs, and was able to replace the front 4 fairly easily, but I can't figure out how to get to the back 2. Since replacing the front 4, the wobble is substantially less, and I feel fairly sure that replacing the back two will help get rid of most of the rest of this wobble.
It almost looks like a person would have to remove the tub, or take off the top cover, and the side/rear panels...essentially do a complete removal of nearly everything that surrounds the tub. I downloaded a maintenance manual, and removing the tub does not look like a good option...lack of special tools, etc. If anyone knows how to get to the back springs, I would sure appreciate some tips. Thanks, in advance |

Looks like you have to buy at least spring hook tool to remove the springs.
- The part number for the spring hook tool is AP2400358 Here are the break down diagrams for the Amana washer Model ALW880QAW Gene.

Thanks, Gene....I completely overlooked this tool when I was browsing this parts breakdown. I knew there had to be some logical way to get these nasty springs off and on, without taking the whole machine apart. Thanks for the "Heads up"....I just ordered the tool, and it should be here in a few days.

Gene,
The Spring hood arrived last week, and I replaced the remaining two springs Saturday morning. 98% of the wobble is gone, and the machine is working like new....piece of cake when you have the right tool. It took longer to remove the covers than it did to replace the springs. Anyone who works on Amana/Maytag should have this spring hook in thier tool bag. Thanks again for the tip. Don |

Don,
We're glad you were able to fix it. Gene.
