I need to replace one or more of the agitator components, but need to know how to safely remove the existing parts without breaking something.

Pull the cap off the top of the agitator (it snaps into place) then see if there is a bolt that holds the agitator on. If so, remove that bolt and pull it off. If there's no bolt it just snaps into place like the cap and you just pull it off. It's not easy though, it's very hard to pull off. I didn't think I was get mine off. You have to lean over the top and get your fingers under the edges and pull as hard as you can. Also you might want to put a folded towel on the top so it doesn't smack you in the face when it comes loose.
