I have a top load Whirlpool washing machine. 3 years old. We put a load of laundry in, it filled up, tried to spin, made a humming noise and then shut off. There was a slight odor. We unplugged it, plugged it back in, and put it on a rinse to get the water out. After a few tries, it finally engaged and spun the water out. We then tried to do the laundry again, and the same thing happened. It gets to the point where it tries to agitate or spin, makes a humming noise and then shuts down. Before I do any more damage, or throw the thing out on the street, can anyone tell me what is wrong with it? Maybe how to fix it and where I can buy the parts? Thank you..

Pull the motor off but leave it connected to the wiring harness. Make sure there is no wire-to-metal contact. Jumper (bypass) the lid switch and pit it in "spin" and see if it runs. Now reverse the leads (better unplug it before you do this) on the pressure switch to make it "think" there's water in it. Select a "wash" setting and see if the motor runs. If it does, the problem is in the gearcase. If not, you either have a bad motor, a bad capacitor, or both. Don't forget to re-switch the pressure switch wires.

My washer still had water in it. I know I should not do this, but figured it is broken anyway.. I put it on the spin cycle.. It make a loud clink noise and started spinning. It tried really hard to build speed, but kept making this clicking noise until finally slowing to a halt and shutting off. At the very least, I got my water out. So, after letting it "cool off", I am able to get it on a spin cycle. It does not spin very long, but it will spin. Not sure if it is the weight that is preventing it from spinning or what.. Just wanted to post this extra symptom. For a $250 washing machine, is this something worth fixing, or should I just buy a new one?
