I recently bought a used whirlpool washer and dryer. The washer was working fine until a few days ago. It started making a loud rubbing screaching noise. It repeats over and over screach ,screach, screach. It does it whenever it tries to spin. When it's on the spin cycle it spins like 6 inches stops, 6 inches stops, while continuing to make the noise.

Perhaps this could be a brake stuck or something jammed? I'm new to washer repair so not sure where to begin troubleshooting. Any help would be great.

I would suspect something stuck in the tub. If you pull off the outer cabinet you will probably see it through the plastic tub.
If ok, go to my sticky above "replacing direct drive washer brake shoes".

Thanks for the info. I probly should have added that it works fine all the way till it gets to the spin cycle. So i'm not suspecting something is caught in there, although thats probly the best case scenario. So sorry for leaving that out. That it agitates but has trouble spinning.

Still suspect brake shoes?

Thanks for your time.

Do the tranny coupler test in my sticky mentioned above. Post results.
