About a week ago my sister was washing clothes and said that the washer stopped mid-cycle and she smelled burnt. Yesterday, I gave it a try with no clothes and it worked fine...so I did about 4 loads and all seemed fine. Today, my sister again did a load, about 1/2 a load, and it happened again. This time I was here to witness.

It stopped right at the rinse and just sits there, then randomly it will start agitating and banging the sides as if the load was off balance. Then it stops. Now it is just sitting there.

Im guessing it is something electrical due to the smell, but I dont know much about washers. I was reading some threads about the lid switch causing similar symptoms but Im not sure.

Edit - Washer suddenly turned on as I was typing this and finished the cycle...this leads me to believe that it is not completely broken, or in the process of breaking.

I appreciate any advice on the matter!

Thanks

Your motor is overheating and shutting down on it's internal overload.
I would not use it till it's fixed and a model # would be helpfull.

Motors will overheat and shut down on their internal overload either from a heavy load or a burnt wire somewhere or bad timer contacts.
I would pull the cover of your timer and check for burnt contacts. Your timer part # 3946452
If ok, I would check your motor connector for burnt wires.
The fact that it's intermittant leaves out a bad motor. The fact that it overheats in agitate, leaves out bad brake shoes. Post results.
