washer fills, spins, ok
in clean section agitator only spins does not agitate back and forth and makes a grating noise like gears sliping

Note. already checked the dogs and they are working fine, the noise sounds like metal gears not meshing correctly
the agitator does not turn in both directions, the dof teeth do engage

because during wash cycle it is only spinning in one direction, all the clothes get tagled tight roung the agitator

Ok, open it up using the instructions here

Kenmore top loader blues (SublimeMasterJW's Appliance Advice)

and try to listen to pinpoint the noise in the agitation cycle. If it is coming from the transmission area it is the transmision which will have to be replaced.
