Kenmore 90 series washer does everything but spinning. Motor and lid switch works.

It started with leaving laundry soaking wet occasionally (when it was full). Then it started to do it every time. As a get-around I started to spin with very few laundry and it would do it some what. Now it wont spin even with a few towels in it. If I try to do spin cycle over and over, I can smell slight friction smell. I opened inside hoping to find a loose belt but no belt (must be a direct drive as I am exploring from forums)

Any expert can tell me if it is the motor bad or another inexpensive part that I can replace?

it does agitate and drain. but not spin.

I assume the motor runs in spin. If so, you either have something caught in the tub, or dragging brake shoes. Shine a lite in the tub and look for something. If nothing, you probably have bad brake shoes and a worn out clutch.
You can follow my procedure in the general talk section page 4 You can use a pipe wrench and a heavy hammer to loosen the drive block nut, turn it counterclockwise.
