Model Number: MAV7257AWW Brand: Maytag Age: 5 - 10 years
Hi
I have been trying to diagnose the issue that I just recently discovered with my Maytag Atlantis Washing Machine (Model # MAV7257AWW). Everything appears to be working electrically - but the device will not spin or agitate. I had the washer apart to see what could be wrong with it and here is what I observed: The belt is on and in place - it seems ok. The motor is loose, but I cannot seem to tighten it up, as it appears to be designed to move around (there are plastic guides that slide around and cannot be tightened) The cam on the transmission bearing appears to be OK, but the dust cover was rubbing on the floor and had a hole worn in it. I took the assembly apart and it appears to be OK. The drum is very difficult to turn manually - which concerns me, but I never took the time to feel it when it was "normal" so I cannot comment. I have narrowed it down to 3 possible items 1 The Belt is shot 2 I need a thrust bearing kit 3 The Tranny is gone and I should make a planter out of the washer. Does anybody have any suggestions for me as to how to narrow it down with out just replacing parts? Thanks in advance Jonathan |

Sorry, forgot to mention - the lid switch is fine, I checked it for correct operation. The motor is running, and the belt is moving - as the system pumps the drum out, it just cannot transfer any energy to the transmission, or the transmission is not working
I need to figure out how to troubleshoot the transmission assembly, any ideas? Jonathan |

VICTORY IS MINE!
I was searching a bit more in depth on the web and I came across a post in another forum that talked to a stuck brake on this same model. I got back underneath it and took the pulley assembly off and started to take the brake housing apart when I noticed the Warning label about the 200 lb spring that is compressed inside. So I did not fully disassemble the brake housing, instead I loosened it up a bit, did a few gentle hits with the hammer to "persuade" it to move. I tighted the housing up, put the pully assembly back on. tried to spin it back and forth a few times and "Bang" The brake released, and the machine was back off and running! I now have two questions: Is brake siezure common on this washer? If you need to take that housing apart with the spring installed is there a good way to do it without loosing an eye? Thanks for your help Jonathan (going to go do laundry now) |
