The washer fills with water and agitation begins. Then it stops and the pump drains the tub. It refills, starts to agitate, and drains again. What do I check?

I removed the water pump and found that the flapper valve had broken off the internal shaft, allowing water to drain constantly. Ordered a new pump from APP. :)
