I have a Kenmore washing machine. It is a direct drive. In the rinse and spin cycles there is this clicking noise. Everything seems to still work properly. No oil leaking, I can move the agitator freely, doesn't stop abruptly after spin. water drains properly. As the clicking occurs I seem to be able to "feel" it in the gearcase. So I have removed the cabinet, spanner nut, outer tub ring, inner tub.

1. How do I remove the basket drive block? Special tool?

2. If it is the gear box, how do I remove it? are there any seals I MUST replace?

3. Is this for the DIY'er? Or leave to a professional?

It looks like your spin basket is rusting out! I would check it, maybe cracked.
If ok, remove the pump and motor and turn the coupler on the tranny clockwise till the spin tube turns. If you feel a rough spot, it's probably your tranny acting up. Also look for tranny oil overflowing, if so, this confirms a bad tranny.
