Default Maytag Performa no spin, agitates instead
Model Number: HAV3460   Brand: Maytag   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

The machine was banging around on spin so i replaced the snubber and the brake and stator while i was at it. It seems that the brake won't release properly. I don't have enough room to add another washer at the drive pulley so it seems that the cam should be traveling enough to release the brake, but i can't spin it in the spin cycle. Two questions: will the machine agitate in spin if the brake doesn't release? and since i replaced the brake and stator, do i need to also use the new design encapsulated thrust bearing assembly?

Some people pry down the shaft with a screwdriver in the shaft groove, others use vise grips and I heard others use weights on the agitator top to force it down, but you must use all of the new thrust washers to get it to release the brake.

Thanks for your response. i have not replaced the thrust assembly yet. There is no slack in the shaft and the washer is very snug. I'm wondering if the new brake might be slightly different and requires the new encapsulated bearing design.

Just r'cvd the new thrust bearing kit, used the thin washer, same problem. Put the thick washer on (aftr wrestling with it for a few hours - even took out the tub), same problem. I'm pretty much at wit's end at this point.

Try tapping on the brake housing while turning the pulley, otherwise try taking the brake apart and greasing bearing surfaces.

New problem now. After a couple of loads, washer will now run and stop after a few seconds. Pulley will turn counter-clock wise but not clockwise.

If that's the spin direction, you probably have something stuck in the tub, if agitate, you just might have a bad tranny bearing.

Clockwise would be agitate. The wife is looking for new ones on the internet. I think I'm just about out of rope. Any recommendations on a new top loader?

You have seized top bearing in the tranny due to a seal leak. New tranny time.
