My washer will not agitate. Is this just the belt, or possibly something like the trans? When it stopped, the belt overheated and filled the laundry room with smoke. It is the original belt. Thanks.

It is possible something got in the tub and jamed the spin basket, or the tranny spindle bearing froze due to an oil leak. Tip the washer back, check for an oil leak and remove the belts. Turn the tranny pulley in the agitate direction, agitator should move back and forth. If hard turn, you have a bad tranny. If hard to turn in the opposite direction (spin), you have something stuck in the tub.
