Hi, I have a GE Top Load Washer (King Size) that was left by the previous owner of the current house. The first few washes seemed fine. About a week ago, the agitator started making really loud noises, and eventually came off during the washing cycle. I tried to put the agitator back on again, but it wobbled, agitated loudly and came off again.
I took off the agitator and coupling and it was crudded up with years of neglect. I think they might be stripped and need to be replaced. But I wanted to check if anyone else had a different opinion or perhaps I would have to replace other parts of the washer before it works again.
Thanks.

Start with replacing the coupling. It sounds like you will have to do it anyway, so see if that solves your problem.

Make sure when you put the agitator back on that you slam it down hard to engage the dogs at the bottom of the coupler.
