My GE washer is making a loud noise during the agitator cycle. It seems to get quieter later in the agitation cycle. I suspect I have a bad mode shifter so I removed the tub, but could not get the left-handed 1-11/16 hub nut off when I tried with the only tool I had that would fit - a pair of channel locks. I then decided to lube the transmission parts with WD40 and reassemble. I ran a test wash (empty) and everything went great - no noise. However, when I loaded the washer with clothes this morning the noise was back, nowhere as lound as before, but it is back.
Clothes are being agitated, so I know the unit is working. I do notice that the tub moves a few inches in both directions though - but don't know if that is normal.
Couple of questions: Other than purchasing the ridiculously expense wrench ($60 -$75) which I will use only once, what other options do I have to remove the nut? Will heating it cause damage to it or something else, can the wrench (WX5X1325 be rented, has anyone tried a socket?
Based on what I've described do you think the mode shifter is the issue and needs to be replaced?
