My washer has always been loud when it spins, but it now sounds like a freight train is running through my home. Is there anything we can do to save it without spending a ton of money?

Get the bearings replaced before it blows out the motor or motor drive electronics. Your tub may have a 10 year warranty if you have been using the HE detergent.

Is this something my husband (who is mechanically inclined) do? I'll also follow up with Whirlpool on the tub warranty...I have only used HE detergents.

Enter search in the washer section "replacing Neptune bearings" Most info applies here. If trouble getting bearings, you can get a auto parts store to mike the bearings to size them and order them. I would try to get sealed bearings. Your basket support spider might be bad when you pull out everything, so just assume it is and add to expense estimate, maybe $ 200 in parts total.

Have searched around and can't find the seal. Might want to re-post and ask for seal order info.
