Hello all,

My (almost) 4 year old Maytag seems to be "dancing" more these days and I can't seem to pinpoint a reason why. My wife and I are aware of the need to balance each load to prevent this; however, it just happens more often recently. So, upon investigation, the first thing I did was to check to ensure the washer is perfectly level and it is OK. However, I did notice one possible issue; in that, the water tub feels "tight" when there is no water in the washer and feels "loose or wobbly" when the tub is full of water. Could this be the root cause of the dancing problem or is this just a normal condition? Any advice on correcting this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gus,

Remove the front panel and check that the suspension springs are attached to the base and outer tub. Check the belt.

Also, look for white shavings under the transmission.

Thanks for the tips but I think I'm going to hold off on any attempted repair for a while because I placed all 4 legs in rubber furniture stops and that seemed to fix the dancing routine (the original washer footing was metal and was sliding all over the floor... very easily, I might add).

However, I did find the same problem posted elswhere and if that turns out to be my problem as well, I'm just going to get a new washer but this time, I'm going to go for a cheap Kenmore.

FYI, here's the post:

"When the machine was just under 3 years old, it began to get out of balance frequently and became very noisy. Within a month of these symptoms, grease starting appearing on my clothes. A week later, unit started leaking. Called for repair and found out that the triple seal and bearings had failed. As a result the parts around the transmission had rusted and corroded. Total repair estimate: $410! Called for a second estimate: $390."

Now, in your expert opinions, could I be looking at the same thing in a month or two?

Your SAV washer is a better washer than say a Performa which is really junk if it is less than a few years old. The other washer may have been a Performa.
