The Kenmore 110.82873100 washer recently started to agitate at a speed much higher than usual. Now we need to use the gentle cycle for the machine to agitate as the former permanent press setting. Also, there is now a new whining noise, only moderately loud. Based on the Whirlpool L-55 manual, the centrifugal switch works, and the motor windings resistances are within tolerance. Could the high and low speeds be operating simultaneously at some timer settings? Suggestions will be appreciated.

Interesting problem. My initial thoughts are that the problem is in the transmission given the noise you are also hearing, but cannot be certain. In fact, I am not certain how a too fast speed can be created.
I can only suggest that you try changing out the timer, and if that does not solve the problem you will have to look towards the transmission. Given the age of the machine you may just want to operate it on the slower speed or replace it rather than sink a lot of money into the timer and/or transmission.

Thank you for the insight Sidfink43. I'll ponder the $$ (sigh).
